Brief
Ministry of Sound (MoS) has long been a global benchmark for club sound and consistently one of DJ Magazine Top 100 Clubs. For nearly twenty-five years, Martin Audio has been central to delivering MoS’s sonic identity, including a unique, immersive audio experience.
The aim was twofold:
1. To create a sound system capable of delivering unparalleled fidelity and impact across multiple rooms.
2. To evolve with cutting-edge immersive technology, without compromising the club’s powerful audio heritage.
“The sound system in The Box is the best in any nightclub anywhere in the world.”
Lohan Presencer, CEO, Ministry of Sound
Approach
The long-term partnership between Ministry of Sound and Martin Audio enabled deep integration of bespoke, state-of-the-art sound reinforcement systems throughout the venue.
The Box
At the heart of MoS is The Box, the main room and audio crown jewel. Martin Audio designed a custom six-stack, 5-way hybrid system, preserving the physical presence of MoS’s iconic stacks while delivering better output and dispersion. Each stack includes:
- Custom AS118 bass cabinets
- Dual 21” ASX subs
- Custom W8C mid-high cabinets
- A specially developed horn flare for broader low-frequency coverage
This distinctive ring of sound ensured consistent stereo imaging from any position on the dancefloor.
Later, MoS became the first nightclub globally to implement Dolby Atmos, using 16 Martin Audio CDD15 coaxial ceiling speakers to deliver overhead sound movement.
Other Rooms and Areas
MoS installed Martin Audio systems across all spaces:
- The Bar: W8LC line arrays, W8LM sidefills, Blackline S218 subs, F12 monitors
- The Baby Box: F15 and S218 subs, F8 infills, F12 booth monitors
- VIP Room: F10s and S218 subs
- Peripheral Areas: C115s in VVIP, AQ6s in the entrance, AQ8s in the courtyard
“We wanted to maintain consistency with Martin Audio… The CDD15 had the coverage and power to compete with our stacks.”
Chris Thoms, Production Manager, MoS
Outcome
The results have been industry-defining.
The installation delivers:
- The bespoke six-stack system in The Box earned four consecutive IDMA awards for Best Club Sound System Design (2010–2013).
- The addition of Dolby Atmos, supported by Martin Audio’s CDD15 ceiling speakers, redefined spatial audio experiences in club environments.
- The integrated Martin Audio infrastructure ensures consistency, power, and coverage across every room — from high-SPL dancefloors to ambient peripheral zones.
“They have become perfectly integrated into the existing sound system infrastructure to support a Dolby Atmos performance.”
Chris Thoms
